Safety & Welfare

The safety and welfare of all in school is a priority and the responsibility of the whole school community.

We are proud to be a happy, fun place where all feel safe and cared for.

safety welfare2   Mobile Phones and Photographs

We do not permit anyone to use their mobile phone in school or to take photographs. We request that whenever anyone comes into school, they ensure their mobile phones are safely stored away and are not used.

During special events, photographs are taken by staff and sent home as mementos of the event or put into the children's Busy Books. Parents/ carers/ visitors are not allowed to photograph or video at any time in school.

Illnesses

If children are not well, they need to be at home until they feel well enough to return to school. We ask parents to notify us on the first day of a child’s absence, letting us know the cause of the illness. If a child has been sick or had diarrhoea, we operate a 48 hour isolation rule to ensure the illness does not spread around the school community.

If your child becomes unwell whilst in nursery, we will contact you by telephone. We ask all parents to ensure their contact numbers and list of emergency contacts are always up to date.

Medical Conditions

Children with medical conditions, such as Asthma, which need medication (e.g. inhalers), must have their own prescribed inhaler(s) in school. Parents must complete medical consent forms before medication can be stored on site and administered by staff.

As a general rule, we do not administer antibiotics in school; the timings of these medicines often allow it to be administered before and after the nursery sessions.

More information about our policy and procedures for Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions can be obtained from the school office. If a child has any medical needs and parents wish to discuss these, tplease contact Mrs Wilson (Headteacher / SENCo) on 01946 811189.

Accidents

All keyworker staff are Paediatric First Aid trained.

Young children often have little bumps, which result in minor cuts and bruises. These are dealt with by qualified staff; parents are informed of these when the child is collected at the end of the session.

Anything resulting in a more significant injury, will be treated by Paediatric First Aid trained staff and recorded on an individual accident form, which parents are asked to read and sign. If necessary, parents will be contacted.

Should a child require a doctor or emergency medical treatment, we contact parents via the emergency contact details provided. It is vital that these numbers are always up to date.

Dropping Off/ Collecting

When a child is dropped off at school, parents must ensure they take them into the classrooms to self-register with their keyworker. Children must never be left in the cloakroom areas unattended. .

Children must be collected by people who are familiar to them and who are listed on their emergency contacts list. We will never allow a child to be collected by anyone not on this list, even if they are known to us or the child.

Parking

As you can appreciate, our school site is very busy. The school grounds begin at the junction of the slip road with Ennerdale Road. To make access as safe as possible, parking and/ or driving onto the school site is NOT allowed at any time of the day (Blue Badge holders exempt).

We ask parents to park along Ennerdale Road or adjoining roads and walk into school.

We monitor parking and have support from the Police, Local Community Support Officers, Governors and parents.

Security Fencing – Intercom Access

Our Nursery School is secured with a perimeter fence and an intercom system to enter the grounds. This ensures children and staff are safe and secure in school and enables us to control who gains access to our site at all times.

“Security is paramount at Cleator Moor Nursery and that is apparent from day 1.”

Personal, Social and Emotional Development Curriculum

We blend in to our curriculum the themes and topics of our personal safety lessons, which are meaningful and age appropriate to our children. Themes include:

  • Stranger Danger
  • Road Safety (our local Lollipop Lady teaches us how to cross the road safely)
  • Healthy eating/ exercise
  • Pants Are Private
  • People Who Help Us (Fire, Ambulance, Police, etc.)
  • How to stay safe when using computers/ technology

“Children separate happily from their parents and carers. They quickly become immersed in learning. This is because they are confident, happy and secure here.”
